The finished back is the reason this works where most desks do not. It can sit in the middle of a room or against a window rather than shoved against a wall, because the shelving and lockable cabinet are designed to be seen from behind.

Kjærnulf's detailing runs through it: iron drawer pulls, exposed mortise and tenon joinery, and uniquely carved legs — decorative work that stricter Danish modernists would not have allowed.
