Three is an awkward number in most furniture and a useful one in armchairs — a pair either side of a fireplace with a third by a window, or a trio around a low table where four would close the circle entirely.

The frames are solid rather than veneered, which is what has kept them square. Chairs of this construction take reupholstery well, so they can be taken as they are now or rebuilt later without the frame being the limiting factor.
